Arsenal Beats Real Madrid As English Premier Claims Fifth Champions League Spot—-The Premier League is set to be one of two leagues in Europe rewarded with an extra place in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League after Arsenal beat Real Madrid 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Thanks to the performances of Premier League clubs in all of UEFA’s competitions this season, England is now guaranteed a top-two spot in UEFA’s association club coefficient rankings, which earns a “European Performance Spot” (EPS). This means that as well as the top four-placed teams in the Premier League, the club finishing fifth in 2024/25 will also go straight into the Champions League next season.

On top of that, the winners of this season’s Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Europa League will each be given a place in the 2025/26 Champions League, if they have not already qualified for the competition through their league positions.

How Premier League clubs qualify for European competitions
It means the Premier League could potentially have as many as SEVEN clubs in next season’s Champions League – the top five teams in the league, plus the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners if they finish outside the top five.

How do the fifth-placed team qualify?

UEFA calculates which two leagues will be rewarded with an extra Champions League place by adding up coefficient points based on the performances of clubs from each league across the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

It means the various leagues are competing with each other in a ranking called the “association club coefficient”.

Every win for a club in any of UEFA’s club competitions this season earns each league two points, while a draw gets one point, and there are no points for a defeat.

On top of that, bonus points are awarded according to where each club finish in their European league table. These are weighted according to the competition. For example, finishing top of the table in the Champions League gets you 12 bonus points, while finishing top of the Europa League gets you six, and the top team in the Conference League get four.

Additional bonus points are awarded for reaching each round from the last 16 onwards. These are also weighted according to the competition.

Bonus points added per round

Competition Bonus points
Champions League 1.5
Europa League 1.0
Conference League 0.5

The points of all participating clubs from each league are totalled and then divided by the number of clubs who started the season in UEFA competitions, to calculate the association club coefficient average.

What are the standings?

England (the Premier League) currently lead the way at the top of the table, with five teams through to the quarter-finals – more than any of their rivals.

Arsenal’s win means that England has secured a top-two spot in the rankings, which would bring a fifth Champions League spot for the Premier League next season.

Here is the coefficients rank as it stands on 8 April after the first legs of the first two UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Nottingham Forest Strike £45m Deal to Sign Liam Delap From Chelsea

Nottingham Forest Strike £45m Deal to Sign Liam Delap From Chelsea—-Forest have beaten Premier League competition to the 23-year-old striker, who is set to undergo a medical after agreeing to join Oliver Glasner’s side.

Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign striker Liam Delap in a club-record transfer worth an initial £45 million, with the deal potentially rising to £50 million through add-ons.

The 23-year-old is expected to undergo his medical on Wednesday before completing his move to the City Ground.

The agreement represents a major investment from Forest as manager Oliver Glasner looks to strengthen his attacking options following a difficult start to the new campaign.

Delap Agrees to Forest Move

Delap has agreed to join Forest after holding discussions with Glasner about the club’s plans for him.

The striker had attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Everton, but Forest ultimately won the race for his signature.

Forest’s previous transfer record was the £37.5 million they paid Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson last summer. Delap’s arrival will therefore establish a new club record.

Chelsea Set to Make £15m Profit

Chelsea signed Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million in June 2025 after he scored 12 Premier League goals during Ipswich’s campaign.

However, his first season at Stamford Bridge proved difficult.

Delap scored only two goals in 41 appearances across all competitions, including one Premier League goal, and subsequently found himself outside new manager Xabi Alonso’s plans.

He had also been training separately from Chelsea’s first-team group and lost the No.9 shirt to João Pedro, further indicating that his future lay away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s decision to sell for £45 million means the club could make around £15 million profit on the striker just 12 months after signing him.

Forest Look to Revive Delap’s Career

For Forest, the move represents an opportunity to bring back the form that made Delap one of the Premier League’s most promising young strikers.

Before joining Chelsea, he impressed at Ipswich, scoring 12 league goals during the 2024/25 season despite the club’s relegation.

Forest will hope that Glasner can help the forward rediscover that form and provide the goals needed to strengthen their attack.

With the medical now scheduled, Delap’s move to Nottingham Forest is expected to be completed shortly.

686 Days and Counting: Hull Loss Keeps Man United Fan Away From the Barber

686 Days and Counting: Hull Loss Keeps Man United Fan Away From the Barber—-Frank Ilett’s bizarre haircut challenge has entered another chapter after Manchester United’s 2–0 defeat to Hull City extended his wait for a five-match winning streak.

For most football fans, a disappointing result means a few hours of frustration before attention turns to the next match.

For Frank Ilett, a Manchester United defeat means something rather different: another few weeks with the same haircut.

Ilett has now reached 686 days without cutting his hair, as his unusual challenge continues following United’s shock 2–0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

The challenge began in October 2024, when Ilett decided he would not cut his hair until Manchester United recorded five consecutive victories. What started as a light-hearted challenge has since turned into a remarkable test of patience.

And he is still waiting.

Hull Put Another Hold on the Challenge

There had been renewed optimism that Ilett might finally be getting closer to a haircut after United ended last season with back-to-back victories.

A win over Hull would have given them a third consecutive victory and kept the possibility of reaching the required five-match run alive.

Instead, the newly promoted Tigers produced a memorable performance, beating United 2–0 in front of their home supporters.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring before Nobel Mendy doubled Hull’s advantage, both goals arriving in the first half.

The result brought United’s winning momentum to an abrupt end — and ensured Ilett’s hair would continue growing.

“This Was Meant to Be One of the Easier Games”

Speaking after the defeat, Ilett admitted that he had expected a very different outcome.

He had viewed the trip to Hull as one of the more manageable fixtures on United’s schedule and was clearly disappointed by the manner of the defeat.

The fan also criticised United’s performance, suggesting that Hull showed greater urgency and desire throughout the contest.

For Ilett, however, the consequences extend beyond the league table.

Every defeat means another delay.

A Challenge That Has Lasted Nearly Two Years

Ilett began his challenge after United’s most recent five-game winning run, which came between January and February 2024.

Since then, the club have failed to produce the sequence required to send him to the barber.

Nearly two years later, the challenge has become an internet curiosity among Manchester United supporters, many of whom have followed the progress of his increasingly lengthy hairstyle.

The latest defeat means the earliest Ilett could potentially complete the challenge is September 20, but only if United win their next five matches.

Those fixtures include meetings with Ipswich Town, Everton, Manchester City, Fulham and their opening Champions League league-phase opponent.

One slip-up would mean the challenge continues.

United’s Results Decide the Fate of His Hair

While United’s immediate concern will be recovering from their disappointing start to the campaign, Ilett will once again be watching every result with a very different interest.

For the players, five consecutive victories would mean momentum and points.

For Ilett, it would finally mean a trip to the barber.

Until then, the scissors remain untouched.

Day 686 has come and gone — and Frank Ilett’s Manchester United-inspired haircut challenge continues
