Chelsea Set To Hand Arsenal Premier League Title Boost Ahead Of Man City Clash—-Arsenal could be aided by London rivals Chelsea ahead of their title-defining clash with Manchester City thanks to the Blues’ FA Cup progression.
Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Chelsea next month could be postponed depending upon the Blues’ success in the FA Cup. Against the odds and following a draw at Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino’s side surprised critics and beat Unai Emery’s Aston Villa on their own turf to progress through to the fifth round.
They will host Leeds United on Wednesday, February 28 with a chance of reaching another cup quarter-final this season. Leeds are currently in good form having beaten Charlie Patino and Charles Sagoe Jr’s Swansea City 4-0 away from home on Tuesday evening.
They are second in the Championship as they look to return to the Premier League like fellow relegation sides Southampton and Leicester City who occupy third and first in the second tier respectively at the time of writing. Should Leeds, however, fail to knock Chelsea out of the FA Cup then it will have an impact on Arsenal.
The quarter-finals of the competition are due to be played on the same weekend as when the Blues were due to visit the Emirates Stadium – the weekend of March 16. Therefore with the FA Cup taking priority, the game will need to be rescheduled.
With Arsenal involved in UEFA Champions League Last-16 action, the next available slot for a midweek game would be the week of April 22, in between an away trip to Wolves and the North London Derby at Tottenham. This could be quite the hectic run for the Gunners if so.
On the positive side, rescheduling the Chelsea game would mean Arsenal would not have a match from March 12 all the way through to March 31 when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. Arsenal turned something of a corner off the back of their mini-winter break which they spent in Dubai with the likes of Ben White and Bukayo Saka looking rejuvenated.
There will be an international break during the time before the game with Man City meaning some Arsenal players will indeed have matches, but the same can be said for Pep Guardiola’s players. But another week off before this crucial fixture might be an accidental blessing in disguise from the Gunners’ west London rivals.
However, it could be argued that not playing as a team for such an extended period could instead be to the detriment to Mikel Arteta’s side’s form. Hopefully, however, it will be the former.
