First Bank Withholds Dead Customer’s Balance Over Strange Loan—-A civil servant living in Iwo, Osun State, has shared how First Bank refused to release the money in her late husband’s account.

The civil servant, who does not want to be named, told FIJ that the state government under former governor Rauf Aregbesola owed workers, including her late husband, three years’ half salaries.

In 2023, Ademola Adeleke, the current governor, began paying part of the backlog of unpaid salaries. FIJ learned that when the widow tried to access the money at First Bank, where her husband’s account was domiciled, the bank told her that the money had been written off for a purported unpaid loan, and that she could not withdraw it.

This revelation was surprising because, according to the woman, her husband did not take any loans. Also, when she first went to the bank to confirm the payment in September 2023, the bank official who verified it didn’t mention any unpaid loan.

She noted that even after her husband’s passing in 2020, she still carried out some transactions on the account until the debit card issued to the deceased expired. “After I learned that the government had started paying part of the unpaid salaries, I went to his bank in Iwo in September 2023.

An official told me that about N108,000 had been paid into my husband’s account. However, I could not access it because it was not my account,” she told FIJ. “Then I made inquiries from my colleagues, and I gathered that I would have to notify the state government, who would then reach out to the bank so the money could be released to me.”

The deceased man’s wife told FIJ that she secured a letter of administration, dated November 23, 2023, from the state government through the state’s ministry of justice.

“I took the letter to First Bank in Iwo. I also wrote a letter of reactivation of the account, but I still could not access the money. I went to the bank again sometime in February 2024, and an official claimed the account had been written off due to loan balances.

But I know my husband had no unpaid loan. “When I asked them to provide his account statement, the official said I wouldn’t be able to get it. But he said he would email the headquarters about the whole issue.” In response to FIJ’s email sent in March, Thaddeus Ozioko, an official from First Bank, wrote:

“In consideration of the sensitive nature of your request, we regret to inform you that we are unable to provide assistance through this channel. Kindly note that your request will need to be addressed in person at one of our branches.”

Manchester City’s season went from bad to worse on Saturday when Pep Guardiola’s men went down 2-1 to Aston Villa, losing their 9th match out of their last 11 in all competitions. This was also their 6th defeat in their last 8 league matches, taking just 4 points from them.

The recent defeat pushed City down to 6th with a 9-point gap with leaders Liverpool. Villa, meanwhile leapfrogged over City and went to 5th. City have now won just 1 in the last 12 games, conceding 27 goals in the process.

On the eve of the match, City’s troubled season was dealt another blow with confirmation that defender Ruben Dias will be out for up to four weeks because of a muscle injury.

Guardiola has cited injuries to key players such as Rodri as a factor in his team’s troubles and the loss of Dias compounds his problems.

Guardiola said Dias’ injury occurred during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Last week, Amad Diallo struck a 90th-minute winner as United staged a stunning late comeback to beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League.

Four-time defending champion City led the Manchester derby 1-0 going into the 88th minute at the Etihad Stadium. But the game was turned round in dramatic fashion as Bruno Fernandes leveled from the penalty spot and Diallo sealed victory for United — prompting head coach Ruben Amorim to declare “something magic happened.

It was a first derby victory for new United head coach Ruben Amorim, who led Sporting Lisbon to a 4-1 win against City in one of his last games in charge of the Portuguese club in November.

“We have a lot to do but it was massive for our fans,” Amorim said.

BREAKING: Like In Ibadan, 7 Children Feared Dead In Another Stampede During Palliative Sharing At Abuja Church—-At least 10 people, including children, are feared dead, and several others sustained injuries during a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred as thousands of residents scrambled to receive palliatives distributed by the church.

The event, organised to provide relief to struggling residents, drew over 3,000 people, mostly from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other nearby settlements. The National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, confirmed the tragic development, noting the suspension of the palliative distribution.

“Yes it’s true but with sketchy details,” he said.

An eyewitness described the scene as chaotic and tragic, revealing that at least seven of the deceased were children.

Many attendees arrived as early as 4:00 AM, hoping to secure their share of the palliatives. The stampede occurred between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM when the crowd surged forward.

“10 people have been reported dead, including children. We just received a call that they have passed on.

“Over 3,000 people came out to receive the palliative. It’s unfortunate. Some of them arrived as early as 4:00 AM. Most of those present were residents of Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other nearby settlements.

“The stampede occurred between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. The distribution of palliatives has been suspended indefinitely, and people are dispersing. May God receive the souls of the departed and protect us from harm,” the eyewitness, a mother of five, said.

In response to the chaos, a combined team of police, military, and DSS officers was deployed to restore order and disperse the crowd. The church premises, initially filled with anxious beneficiaries, gradually cleared as security personnel enforced the suspension.

This tragedy mirrors a similar incident that occurred just days earlier in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children and left six others critically injured. The event, held at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, attracted over 5,000 children and turned fatal when attendees rushed to receive food and gifts distributed by the organizers.
