Gas Explosion Rocks Shell Facility In Bayelsa

Gas Explosion Rocks Shell Facility In Bayelsa—-Explosions recently rocked a gas processing plant operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) at Gbarain, Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa state.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, affected a gas plant supplying the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) export terminal in Bonny Island, Rivers state.

According to a community member, the explosion originated from a pipeline feeding the gas plant. Jessie David, a resident, attributed the blast to suspected vandalism, resulting in an explosion and the release of thick smoke and gaseous emissions.

The plant operator was promptly alerted, leading to the isolation of the affected pipeline and a subsequent reduction in pressure.

SPDC’s spokesperson, Michael Adande, confirmed the incident, stating that while the source of the explosion appears to be external to the facility, investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.

He assured that the company is in close communication with regulatory authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of surrounding communities.

This incident follows a gas explosion on May 8 in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos, where two individuals lost their lives.

The occurrence underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and implementing robust safety measures in gas processing and distribution facilities.
