Tinubu Reacts To Supreme Court’s Judgement On Local Govt’s Financial Autonomy

Tinubu Reacts To Supreme Court’s Judgement On Local Govt’s Financial Autonomy—-President Bola Tinubu has praised the Supreme Court decision affirming the constitutional rights of local governments in Nigeria.

The President’s response, conveyed through a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Thursday, highlights the significance of the ruling for the country’s governance.

Tinubu emphasised that one of Nigeria’s longstanding challenges has been the ineffective administration of local governments, which play a crucial role in grassroots governance.

He urged local council leaders to ensure that services are delivered efficiently to the broad spectrum of Nigerians at the local level.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes the welfare of all Nigerians, regardless of their faith, tribe, gender, political affiliation, or other divisions. This ruling empowers citizens, especially the poor, to hold their local leaders accountable. It ensures transparency in the management of local government funds and mandates service delivery without excuses,” Tinubu stated.

The President noted that his administration pursued this legal battle out of a steadfast belief that the people deserve relief.

He celebrated the ruling as a validation that legitimate means can be used to achieve structural reforms in Nigeria, enhancing both the economy and the society’s fairness.

Tinubu also pointed out that the provision of essential services, such as road maintenance, street lighting, and community security, has suffered due to the undermining of local governments. The Supreme Court’s decision, he noted, is historically significant as it upholds the financial autonomy and other key principles of local governance, reinforcing Nigeria’s federal structure.

The President commended the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedicated and patriotic efforts in this case. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the principles of governance that benefit all citizens, aiming to build an efficient and performance-driven system for every Nigerian.
