Top Military Officer Disguises As Civilian, Nabs Soldier Extorting Money From Motorists—-A senior military official has apprehended a Nigerian soldier engaging in extortion from motorists in Abia State, southeastern Nigeria.

The soldier stationed at 144 (R) Battalion, Ohafia, was caught in the act at a checkpoint along Port Harcourt Road.

Reports indicate that military personnel at the checkpoint had been accused of soliciting bribes from both commercial and private motorists traveling intra/interstate routes.

Those who refused to comply allegedly faced repercussions, such as being forced to park by the roadside for extended periods, SaharaReporters reported on Sunday.

In response to these allegations, a senior officer decided to investigate undercover.

Disguised as a civilian, the officer marked some Naira notes and approached the checkpoint. Subsequently, the soldier was apprehended in the act of extorting money from motorists.

The soldier, who holds the rank of sergeant and has served in the Nigerian Army since February 15, 1999, was demoted to the rank of corporal following internal disciplinary measures.

Despite attempts to verify this information with the army spokesman, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, there has been no response to inquiries made via calls or text messages.

The court’s decision comes after months of speculation and legal proceedings surrounding the controversial case.
