Ayobo/Agboyi Ketu Residents Lament Neglect by LASG; Call On Governor Sanwo Olu To Fulfill Dredging And Waterways Transportation Promises—-Some residents of Ayobo as well as well Agboyi-Ketu axis in Lagos have alleged the neglect of water transportation infrastructure in their areas in spite of the pledge by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritise dredging and channelisation to enhance the movements and livelihoods of the people of the areas.

Residents of Ayobo / Agboyi-Ketu like other communities of similar terrain have, over the years, clamour for prioritisation of water transportation by LASG to ease their movements and to facilitate socio-economic activities.

In line with the expectations of residents, Governor Sanwo Olu during his electioneering campaigns promised to dredge waterways from Ijon, Ayobo to Mile 2 and as well open up the water channels that link Agboyi Ketu and Ikorodu axis of the state to enable boats navigate through these beds of waterways.

Residents are however lamenting that the promise by the governor has remained largely unfulfilled apparently as a result sabotage on account of selfish interest by individuals which the governor may not be fully aware.

Kamaldeen Gbadeyanka, a resident of one of the communities said that although LASG had completed roads leading to the jetty, there however nothing yet to demonstrate commitment to the dredging projects which is required to facilitate water transportation. It would be recalled that LASG recently completed the Ishefun road up to the modern Jetty terminal constructed at Ijon. Some residents however believe the dredging of waterways will enhance access to Ayobo and its environs.

More instructive however is that some residents are alleging diversion of funds released for dredging projects across the waterways in Lagos State. Diversion of funds for dredging is believed to have orchestrated through questionable appropriation by the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA). Some of the concerned residents further alleged that while the dredging of Ilado-Ilashe-Odofin waterways by the government was prioritised to accommodate beach houses for the rich, dredging of more strategic channels in other suburbs has been neglected thereby denying the large population of Ayobo and Agboyi-Ketu of the opportunity of water transportation to ease heavy road traffic in the areas.

Residents are are displeased that the dredging of the waterways along Ayobo as well as Agboyi-Ketu axis which should have been a source of huge relief to teeming population has been neglected while government prioritise the dredging of 5 cowries-Lekki-Lagoon-Parkview/Banana Island which is already 20m deep and capable of taking bigger boats. Residents are therefore appealing to Governor Sanwo-Olu to prioritise the dredging of waterways that link Ayobo as well as Agboyi- Ketu to facilitate water transportation.

Some residents who pleaded anonymity attributed the neglect of the dredging of waterways along Ayobo as well as Agboyi-Ketu axis to corrupt top officials of the administration of Governor Sanwo Olu who allegedly diverted resources earmarked for clearing and expansion of waterways with the aims of complementing water transportation infrastructure in Lagos State.

Some concerned residents alleged that some of the ongoing dredging projects were awarded to proxies of leading members in the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu who has achieved very little or no progress in spite of payments received for the contracts. Concerned residents further claimed that ongoing dredging and channelisation projects are being handled shoddily as a result of the incompetence of the contractors. Those awarded the dredging contracts are said to lack the requisite expertise and equipment to deliver on the contract in spite of the substantial public funds already committed to the projects.

Improvement of water transportation infrastructure is a potential catalyst for transforming economic activities across communities and neighbourhoods in Lagos State.

Unfortunately, for communities along the axis of Ayobo as well as Agboyi-Ketu, lack of dredging of waterways covered with mud and overgrown weeds hinder waterways navigation routes to other parts of Lagos State

Our investigations however revealed that under the leadership of Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu who was the Chairman of House Committee on Appropriation (now the House Committee Chairman on Waterfront Infrastructures), budgetary provisions for dredging and waterways infrastructure were arbitrarily diverted to other projects thereby sabotaging the effort of the government.

Concerned residents are therefore calling for the immediate intervention of Governor Sanwo Olu towards ensuring that resources are no longer diverted or wasted but to also ensure that only contractors with requisite competence as well as required expertise and equipment are awarded the dredging of waterways to facilitate rapid transformation of water infrastructure in Lagos State.

Israel, Hamas Reach Gaza Ceasefire Ahead Of Trump’s Inauguration—-Thecloudngr reports that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a deal for a ceasefire and release of hostages being held in Gaza, following separate meetings with Qatar’s prime minister.

A US official confirmed the deal.

Pressure to put an end to the fighting had ratcheted up in recent days, as mediators – Qatar, Egypt and the United States – intensified efforts to cement an agreement.

A source close to the talks said Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, was meeting Hamas negotiators in his office for a final push to seal the deal.

The source, who briefed on the talks later, said the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal was reached, following the Qatari PM’s meeting with Hamas negotiators and, separately, Israeli negotiators in his office.

The announcement comes after months of failed bids to end the deadliest war in Gaza’s history, and days ahead of the inauguration of US president-elect Donald Trump, who immediately hailed the deal before it was officially announced by the White House.

Trump

“We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!” Trump said on his Truth Social network.

Trump had warned Hamas of “hell to pay” if it did not free the remaining captives before he took office, and envoys from both his incoming administration and President Joe Biden’s outgoing one had been present at the latest negotiations.

Hamas sparked the war in Gaza by staging the deadliest-ever attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,210 people, mostly civilians, according to an official Israeli figures.

Palestinian militants also took 251 people hostage during the attack, 94 of whom are still being held in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza has killed 46,707 people, most of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the UN considers reliable.

Sticking points

Among the sticking points in successive rounds of talks had been disagreements over the permanence of any ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the scale of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian territory.

The UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, facing an Israeli ban on its activities set to take effect later this month, said it will continue providing much-needed aid.

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who vowed to crush Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 attack, has opposed any post-war role for the militant group in the territory.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday Israel would ultimately “have to accept reuniting Gaza and the West Bank under the leadership of a reformed” Palestinian Authority, and embrace a “path toward forming an independent Palestinian state”.

He added that the “best incentive” to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace remained the prospect of normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Palestinian PM

Palestinian prime minister Mohammed Mustafa, speaking in Oslo, said the latest push for a Gaza ceasefire showed international pressure on Israel “does pay off”.

The October 7 attack on communities in southern Israel sparked uproar around the world, as did the scale of the suffering in Gaza from the retaliatory war.

World powers and international organisations have for months pushed for a ceasefire, which up until today had remained elusive.

Mudashiru Obasa Impeached

JUST IN: Lagos Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa Impeached As Mojisola Meranda Sworn In As First Female Speaker [VIDEO]—-Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, accusing him of multiple statutory and financial infractions.

Mr Obasa was subsequently replaced by his deputy Lasbat Meranda. Mrs Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the House.

The removal came days after The Gazette reported how Mr Obasa oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for back up vehicles for lawmakers, as well as other controversial activities.

Mr Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, resuming office alongside former one-term governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

Repeated charges of fraud and political thuggery have marked his speakership. In 2020, Peoples Gazette published a series of investigations detailing how Mr Obasa diverted Lagos funds to his personal firms and bank accounts. Sahara Reporters at the time also uncovered Mr Obasa’s assets across Lagos.

He was invited to be questioned by the EFCC after the anti-graft office became overwhelmed by media reports of Mr Obasa’s mismanagement. He denied all allegations, and no charges were filed after he met with detectives.
