BREAKING: Angry Youths Burn Down INEC Office In Benue—-The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported that its office in the Sankara area of Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State has been burnt down.

The incident occurred during protests by youths in the area against the activities of bandits.

Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman for Information and Voter Education Committee, issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the destruction of the office. The State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Sam Egwu, reported the attack which occurred around 2pm.

The statement noted that while no casualties were reported, the INEC building suffered extensive damage. Office furniture, 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles were among the items destroyed in the attack.

Security agencies have been alerted and have deployed personnel to the area in response to the incident. The situation underscores ongoing security challenges in some communities, prompting local protests against insecurity and related issues affecting the region.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further and take necessary steps to restore order and ensure the safety of electoral facilities ahead of future engagements.
