Internal Wrangling Surge In PDP As Calls Grow Louder For Damagum’s Removal—-The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, with mounting pressure on the party’s embattled acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, to step aside.

Party insiders reveal that factions loyal to various power blocs are at loggerheads, threatening to deepen the cracks within the opposition party.

At a recent Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, members voiced frustration over the state of the party, particularly the National Working Committee’s (NWC) repeated delays in convening a much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

The postponement has fueled allegations that the party has been hijacked by vested interests, with Damagum’s leadership at the centre of the controversy.

The defection of Eriethake Ibori-Suenu, a PDP House of Representatives member from Delta State and daughter of former Governor James Ibori, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further escalated tensions.

The BoT members reportedly view the defection as a symptom of the party’s waning influence under Damagum’s leadership.

In their communique, the BoT demanded that the NWC convene the NEC meeting by February 2025 to address pressing issues, including the nomination of a replacement for former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, by the North Central Zone.

Damagum’s critics, many of whom are aligned with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accuse him of favouring the interests of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Despite the opposition, Damagum’s camp remains optimistic. His supporters argue that a court injunction secures his position until December 2025, allowing him to serve out his term.

However, some insiders suggest that Damagum is prepared to revert to his role as Deputy National Chairman (North) if his tenure as acting Chairman is cut short.

APC Adopts Bola Oyebamiji as Consensus Candidate

APC Adopts Bola Oyebamiji as Consensus Candidate for Osun Governorship Election—-Bola Oyebamiji, the immediate past Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2026 Osun State gubernatorial election.

Oyebamiji was adopted on Saturday during the party’s governorship primary in Osogbo after two aspirants, Kunle Adegoke (SAN) and Senator Babajide Omoworare, moved a motion endorsing him as the party’s flagbearer.

The motion was put to a voice vote by the Chairman of the APC governorship primary committee and Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, and it received overwhelming approval from party members in attendance.

Okpebholo thereafter declared Oyebamiji as the party’s candidate.

“By the power conferred on me, I present to you Bola Oyebamiji as the governorship candidate of our party,” Okpebholo announced.

SaharaReporters gathered that the outcome had been largely predetermined, with party leaders earlier indicating that the primary would be conducted by affirmation rather than through a competitive ballot.

The primary election was attended by top APC figures, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

The development followed the emergence earlier in the week of 1,660 delegates expected to participate in the APC’s December 13 governorship primary.

Multiple sources within the party also confirmed that all seven APC governorship aspirants in Osun had agreed to back a consensus candidate after a late-night meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Former APC National Secretary and one-time Osun governorship aspirant, Senator Iyiola Omisore, had publicly endorsed the consensus arrangement, saying he accepted the decision after consultations with President Tinubu.

Omisore was among seven aspirants earlier disqualified by the APC screening committee over alleged violations of party guidelines and electoral provisions.
